A hydraulic cylinder converts hydraulic pressure into linear mechanical movement. Its performance depends on how precisely its core components are matched to one another.

  • Cylinder Barrel — forms the pressure chamber for hydraulic oil and guides the piston assembly.
  • Piston — converts hydraulic pressure into linear force.

How to Measure a Hydraulic Cylinder Before Ordering

Accurate measurement is the difference between a drop-in replacement and a return shipment. Before removing a cylinder, shut the equipment down, release hydraulic pressure and clean the cylinder and connection areas. Use calibrated measuring tools throughout.

Five Dimensions We Need First

  • Bore Diameter — internal diameter of the barrel, measured at more than one position to check for wear variation.
  • Rod Diameter — piston rod diameter measured at a clean, unworn section and from different directions.
  • Stroke Length — distance between the fully retracted and fully extended positions.
  • Overall Length — cylinder length in the stated reference position, usually retracted.
  • Mounting Type — confirm the connection at both ends: flange, trunnion, clevis or spherical mounting.
